What are IoT solutions?
A sensor attached to something, reporting over a network to somewhere you can read it. The sensor might measure position, temperature, humidity, door state, engine data or power draw. What separates a working project from an expensive one is not the sensor, it is deciding in advance which decision the readings will change. If nobody will act differently because of the data, the project produces reports rather than value.
What can IoT monitoring actually track in Malta?
Common cases here are vehicle location and engine data, temperature and humidity inside refrigerated transport, door open and closed state on delivery vehicles, location of trailers, generators and containers with no power supply, tools and small plant on sites, and driver identification. Fixed installations like building automation and utility metering are also IoT but are a different discipline with different suppliers.
How long do IoT sensor batteries last?
Anywhere from months to several years, decided almost entirely by how often the device reports. Transmitting is what drains a battery, so a tracker reporting once daily lasts dramatically longer than one reporting every few minutes. Treat any battery-life figure quoted without a reporting interval as meaningless. The right approach is to state the life you need, then set the interval to meet it.
Do IoT sensors need WiFi or a SIM card?
It depends on the sensor. Devices with their own SIM report from anywhere with mobile coverage and carry a monthly data cost. Bluetooth sensors and tags have no SIM and no running cost, but a range of a few metres, so they report only when something connected passes nearby. In Malta that limitation matters less than elsewhere, because a tracked fleet covers the island frequently enough to pick up tags regularly.
How much does an IoT project cost in Malta?
For vehicle and asset monitoring, the usual shape is a one-time hardware cost per device plus a monthly per-device subscription covering connectivity and the platform. Sensors and battery-powered asset trackers are priced per unit on top of that. The cost that catches people out is not the hardware, it is installation across a fleet, so ask for fitting to be quoted as a separate line rather than folded into a headline price.
How do I choose an IoT supplier?
Ask four things. Can they state the reporting interval behind any battery life they quote, which shows whether they understand the trade-off. Will your data leave their platform through an API, or are you locked in. Who physically fits the hardware, and are they employed or subcontracted, because a fleet is only as reliable as its installation. And what do they not do. A supplier claiming to cover every category, mobile and fixed, is usually reselling most of it.
Should one supplier handle both vehicles and buildings?
Rarely, and it is worth being suspicious when one offers to. Mobile IoT and fixed building IoT need different hardware, different installation skills and different support arrangements. Depth in one usually means partnership or resale in the other. For a project spanning both, most Maltese operators do better with a specialist on each side than with a single supplier who is genuinely strong on only one.
